Tata Docomo 3G e-stick – How is it?

I was passing through Jayanagar 4th Block in Bengaluru when I suddenly happened to see a huge banner with “TATA Docomo 3g eStick” on it! While I was wondering that TATA Docomo is probably the last company to release an USB stick, the next line below the banner said “Now browse at speeds up to 21.1 mbps” !! Now getting a speed of 21.1 mbps isn’t a joke and yes, TATA Docomo is the first company to release an USB stick which can offer a maximum speed of 21.1. mbps.  So what can you expect with a 21.1 mbps connection? Download your favourite movie in less than 30 minutes or download your favourite mp3 in less than 5 seconds!! No more waiting overnight to download your favourite movies from Torrentz!

Tata Docomo also claims that their unlimited data plans starts from 1000 INR and considering this, I was completely happy that TATA is offering something unusual and something great! And considering the fact that you can browse at 21.1 mbps speed at just 1000 INR per month, life seems to be so simple! Plus, as it is an e-stick, no need to provide some space in your home for a modem or for a router! Internet on the go with the 3g e-stick!

I immediately went to the TATA showroom in order to know, what actually are they offering though, I had in my mind that there would be a catch somewhere! TATA representatives gave me a warm smile and invited me, saying that I had taken a right decision and that 3g e-stick actually offers 21.1 mbps speed. The 3G stick would cost 1999 INR and suitable plans can then be chosen accordingly depending on one’s browsing needs. I asked them for the plans and they said, they do have both prepaid and postpaid plans. I requested for the prepaid plans. The representative provided me with the plans below –

Prepaid – Plan 1 : 1000 INR per month: Unlimited browsing at 3.6 mbps
Data limit: 5 GB

Plan 2 : 1250 INR per month: Unlimited browsing at 3.6 mbps
Data limit: 10 GB

Plan 3 : 1275 INR per month: Unlimited browsing at 7.2 mbps
Data limit: 5 GB

Plan 4 : 1500 INR per month: Unlimited browsing at 7.2 mbps
Data limit: 10 GB

Ok! I was happy with the available plan but I had a question for the representative, asking about further browsing once the data limit has passed. I asked him, what about browsing above 5 GB if I go for the initial 1000 INR/month prepaid plan? What is the reduced speed that I get?

The representative’s answer was quite shocking. The representative said that for all of the above 4 plans, after the respective data limit has passed, the speed automatically drops to 128 kbps or even lesser !!!!! Now does TATA expect us to browse at 128 kbps? Trust me, at peak times, you will not be able to open Google.com too, if you browse at 128 kbps!! Browsing at 128 kbps is practically impossible! Now if I buy the first plan, I can download a maximum of 5 to 7 movies and I am done! For the rest of the month, I need to browse at 128 kbps or even less!

I showed my disappointment about the data limit and the speed offered post data limit. The representative said that this is an initial release and they would hope that the post data limit browsing would be increased to at least 256 kbps. I then asked the representative for the postpaid plans and he provided me with the following information –

Postpaid – Plan 1: 1000 INR per month: Unlimited browsing at 3.6 mbps
Data limit: 5 GB

Plan 2 : 1250 INR per month: Unlimited browsing at 3.6 mbps
Data limit: 10 GB

Plan 3 : 1275 INR per month: Unlimited browsing at 7.2 mbps
Data limit: 5 GB

Plan 4 : 1500 INR per month: Unlimited browsing at 7.2 mbps
Data limit: 10 GB

Plan 5: 2500 INR per month: Unlimited browsing at 21.1 mbps
Data Limit: 15 GB

So in postpaid plan, you get to browse at the max speed of 21.1 mbps. You will however be able to enjoy this unmatched speed until 15 GB only. Later, you will need to struggle at 128 kbps or even less! So what is the final verdict? If you are ready to download 1 to 3 movies/month plus happy to browse your usual social networking sites and thousands of other websites, you can definitely go for the 2500 INR/month postpaid plan. As far as I have seen, you will not end up browsing 15 GB so early. Even upon extensive browsing, you will spend a maximum of 8 to 10 GB per month. Apart from that, other plans do not seem to be of much use to me, nor for others.

I however definitely appreciate TATA Docomo for manufacturing a portable 3g stick which has the capacity of offering speeds up to 21.1 mbps but at the same time, it is disappointing that they have reduced the Data limit to less than 5 GB on the cheapest prepaid plan plus, the browsing speed of 128 kbps (or even less) post data limit is really really low. So what are you going to do? Head out to buy the all new 3g stick? Or, happy with your existing ISP? Decide for yourself and drop in your comments below!
